The Ministry of SMEs and Startups and Samsung Electronics held a fabless contest in Seoul on July 27. A total of 21 fabless companies joined the contest and the ministry and Samsung Electronics selected five to assist in their prototype production and new product testing.

Specifically, the five companies will participate in Samsung Electronics’ design, foundry and post-processing task projects from next month to July next year. The ministry is planning to provide each up to one million won.

The five companies are DEEPX, GLS, SKAi Chips, Semibrain and Raontech. In the projects, DEEPX will develop neural processing units for smart consumer electronics and mobility and GLS will work on chips for faster wireless video transmission. The other three are working on renewable energy-based power supply systems, 8-nm embedded flash memories, and chips for use in augmented reality glasses, respectively.

In the meantime, the ministry recently increased its operating fund assistance for fabless companies from 500 million to one billion won each. In addition, it will open non-memory semiconductor departments with two colleges this year.
