Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have joined hands to explore the space technology market using artificial intelligence (AI).

KAI announced on July 25 that it has recently signed a business agreement with  KAIST to jointly research and develop core technologies that are required to upgrade the domestic space industry, such as super-resolution imaging (SR) that enhances the resolution of an imaging system

In April, KAI established Meissa Planet, a joint venture (JV) with Meissa, a company specializing in aerial image analysis. By joining hands with KAIST, KAI has set up a system to promote the high-value-added satellite service business that incorporates AI and big data.

The space industry is expected to grow to about US$1.1 trillion by 2040. Of the total, satellite service is expected to account for 54.8 percent, ground equipment 38 percent, satellite manufacturing 5.1 percent, and the launch service 1.9 percent.

In line with the Korean government’s space development plan, KAI is developing microsatellites, medium/large satellites and launch vehicles. It plans to expand its business area to the space service field and foster the space business as a future growth driver.
