K2 Tanks, K9 Howitzers and FA-50 Light Attackers

Korean companies are expected to sign large-scale weapons export contracts with Poland late this month.

Hyundai Rotem, Korea Aerospace Industries and Hanwha Defense are expected to sign large-scale contracts with the Ministry of National Defense of Poland late this month. At present, they are discussing a long-term supply of the K9 howitzer, FA-50 light attacker, K2 tank, etc.

Specifically, Hyundai Rotem is expected to supply 180 K2 tanks until 2025, which are equivalent to three trillion won. In addition, an additional supply of 400 units until 2030 is being discussed. Korea Aerospace Industries is expected to supply 48 units of the aircraft, which has a price of 50 billion won. The company’s contract with the ministry is expected to exceed three trillion won including component supply and after-sales service. The export from Hanwha Defense is expected to be 670 howitzers, which total at least four trillion won.

Regarding these contracts, Polish National Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak visited the three companies in South Korea in May this year. The country’s weaponry demand has rapidly increased since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.

The three companies are targeting other markets at the same time, including Norway, Australia, Colombia and Malaysia. In Norway, a tank procurement project is scheduled to be launched late this year with a scale of US$1.7 billion. Australia will select its new infantry fighting vehicles soon, which will add up to at least US$5 billion. Colombia and Malaysia are planning to import the light attacker by investing US$1.7 billion or more.
