Nuclear Power to Account for 30% of Power Supply in 2030

The South Korean government confirmed on July 5 that it would raise the ratio of nuclear power generation to at least 30 percent by 2030 and resume the construction of Shin Hanul Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 and 4.

At the end of 2021, a total of 24 nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 23.3 GW were in operation in South Korea to account for 27.4 percent of its total power generation. The South Korean government is planning to increase the figures to 28, 28.9 GW and more than 30 percent by 2030. Shin Hanul Units 1 and 2 are scheduled to be completed in the second half of this year, Shin Kori Units 5 and 6 are scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2025, and the government said it would prepare so that those can be completed without a hitch.

The government also released a plan on nuclear power industry recovery. According to the plan, 92.5 billion won of projects will be launched this year regarding the construction of Shin Hanul Units 3 and 4 and nuclear power plant equipment procurement and 399.2 billion won will be invested until 2028 for more overseas nuclear power plant construction and small modular reactor R&D and commercialization.
