Mercedes-Benz Tops the List for 4th Consecutive Month

Imported car sales in May dropped 2.4 percent from a year ago.

The Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association announced on June 7 that a total of 23,512 imported cars were newly registered in South Korea last month, down 2.4 percent from a year ago and up 1.9 percent from the previous month.

The figure for the first five months of this year is 108,314, down 10.9 percent from a year earlier.

Last month, the new registration of Mercedes-Benz cars totaled 7,388, followed by BMW (6,402), Audi (1,865), Volkswagen (1,182), Mini (1,087), Volvo (1,015), Porsche (702), Jeep (591), Lincoln (582), Toyota (480), Ford (456), Chevrolet (418), Lexus (391) and Honda (265). Mercedes-Benz topped the list for the fourth consecutive month.

European cars accounted for 86.2 percent of the monthly registration, followed by U.S. (9 percent) and Japanese (4.8 percent).

By fuel type, gasoline accounted for 48.7 percent and hybrid made up 29.8 percent. Diesel, electric and plug-in hybrid accounted for 13.2 percent, 4.5 percent and 3.8 percent, respectively.
