OLED Displays Faster than LCD Panels in Response Time

LG Display’s 42-inch bendable OLED display

Research results show that organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays are about 0.05 seconds faster than LCD panels in response speed when playing games, LG Display said at an international seminar in the United States on May 11 (local time).

The company tested various genres of games with OLED, LCD and flat/curved displays for top-notch players of online games. Through the test, it selected bendable OLED displays as the best gaming display. It announced its findings at SID Display Week 2022 held in San Jose of the United States.

The bendable OLED displays received the highest evaluation scores in response time, curvature and eye health. Response time is the time an input signal of the graphic device to be displayed on the screen and the user perceives it with the eyes to operate the mouse or keyboard.

The company’s researchers explained that the average response time of OLED displays was 0.05 seconds (50ms) faster than LCD panels.

Considering that a difference in response time that can be obtained by using a gaming mouse is 10 to 20 ms, 50 ms is a meaningful time that can make or break a game, the company explained.

The company also explained that in the case of curvature, there were some differences depending on game genres. Most games showed the highest sense of realism and immersion in an 800R curved screen, but a flat screen was more suitable for some sports games, such as soccer games.

"Bendable OLED displays satisfy all the three conditions for a gaming display -- response time, curvature and eye health," the researchers said.

The company is currently developing OLED panels for gaming including bendable OLED panels for gaming and plans to promote collaboration with global gaming brands in the future.
