Waiting for ER Market to Bloom

LG Display is preparing to enter the extended reality (XR) market

LG Display is preparing to enter the extended reality (XR) market, a company official said on April 27.

“We are closely monitoring the XT market and are preparing to enter it quickly if profitability and market size meet our standards,” the official said in a conference call for a first-quarter earnings announcement. “We are preparing products in advance.”

Extended reality is an ultra-realistic technology or service that encompasses virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality. To use an extended reality service, a dedicated headset is required. A curved OLED panel with 8K picture quality goes into such dedicated headsets. For this reason, it has come into the spotlight as a next-generation OLED application.

Apple is currently developing smart glasses that combine an augmented reality headset with an AR device. Accordingly, industry officials are raising the prospect that LG Display may supply the smart glasses to Apple, as it has a long cooperative relationship with the U.S. tech giant.

When the Small and Medium-sized Business Division was launched in 2021, LG Display announced that the division would be in charge of OLED panels for extended reality headsets.
