Doosan Enerbility, previously called Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, will start the production of small modular reactors (SMRs) in cooperation with NuScale Power of the United States.

The company announced on April 25 that it signed an agreement to start full-scale production of NuScale Power Modules (NPMs), a single integrated unit that incorporates all components for steam generation and heat exchange.

A signing ceremony was held at Doosan Tower in Seoul in the presence of Park Ji-won, chairman of Doosan Enerbility, and John Hopkins, president of NuScale Power.

Under this agreement, Doosan Enerbility will start manufacturing NPMs to be supplied to NuScale Power’s Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS) project in Idaho of the United States. NuScale Power is planning to complete the UAMPS in 2029.

Doosan Enerbility plans to start manufacturing large cast and forging materials used for SMR production in the second half of 2022 and start producing SMRs in earnest in the second half of 2023.

Doosan Energity invested US$138 million for a stake in NuScale Power together with Korean investors. In 2019, it received an order for an SMR manufacturability review service from NuScale Power, and completed it in January 2021. It is currently producing a prototype.

A NuScale Power's SMR consists of up to 12 modules, which are 77 MW per unit, It can generate up to 924 MW. NuScale Power passed a design certification review by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in 2020 for the first time among SMR models.
