A People Power Party Lawmaker Asserts

Sangmyung Wind Farm for green hydrogen production in Jeju

People Power Party lawmaker Han Moo-kyung said on April 18 that the Sangmyung Wind Farm in Jeju produced 706 kg of hydrogen for 61 days by using 45,443 kwh of electricity.

“In other words, 64.3 kwh of electricity was used to produce 1 kg of hydrogen,” she said, adding, “Given that the wholesale electricity price in Jeju was 229.5 won per kwh on average last month, it can be said that electricity equivalent to 14,727 won is required in producing 1 kg of hydrogen by wind power and water electrolysis.”

The unit cost of production is much lower in the case of nuclear power generation-based hydrogen production. The unit cost is US$2.5 and US$2.3 according to the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Idaho National Laboratory, respectively.

According to industry sources, the unit cost in South Korea can be lowered to US$1.7 on condition that nuclear power continues to be used for clean hydrogen production and the United States, the United Kingdom, and so on are expanding nuclear power generation-based green hydrogen production in order to maximize their economic advantages.
