Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) announced on March 23 that Czech energy security ambassador Vaclav Bartuska visited Shin Kori Nuclear Power Plant Unit 4 on March 22. At present, KHNP is competing to win the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant project in the Czech Republic.

The ambassador visited the Unit 5 and 6 construction sites as well and mentioned that South Korean enterprises are successfully expanding their business in the Czech Republic these days. He is scheduled to have meetings at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, which is a nuclear power plant equipment supplier.

The Czech government released the final invitation to bid for the project on March 17 and KHNP held a supplier symposium in Prague on March 22 in an effort to win the project. At the symposium, which was KHNP President Chung Jae-hoon’s seventh visit to the city for the purpose, KHNP and its consortium partners made presentations on the excellence of their nuclear power plant technology and their localization strategy.

The president of KHNP met with Industry and Trade Minister Jozef Sikela after the symposium. On March 23, KHNP and CEZ signed a memorandum of understanding on nuclear power plant operation and maintenance and small modular reactor development. The size of the project is approximately 8 trillion won and the commercial operation is scheduled for 2036 after construction initiation in 2029. Preferred bidder selection and final contract conclusion are scheduled for 2024 and the South Korean consortium is currently vying with U.S. and French consortiums.
