In Competition with WEC and EDF

The Dukovany Nuclear Power Station in the Czech Republic

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) announced on March 18 that it has been invited to participate in the tender for a new nuclear power plant project in the Czech Republic.

In 2021, the Czech government announced a second-stage bidding procedure for the construction of a new nuclear power plant. It excluded Russia’s Rosatom and China’s CGN from the bidding process due to security risks and allowed three companies -- KHNP of Korea, WEC of the United States and EDF of France -- to undergo a security evaluation, with the companies that passed the evaluations to be invited to the main tender.

The Czech government and Czech Electric Power Corp., which is the client of the new nuclear power project, conducted the security evaluation for the three suppliers in 2021. In January 2022, it announced that all the participating companies pass the security evaluation.

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala approved the start of the tender for the nuclear power plant project at a cabinet meeting on March 2. He visited the planned plant site and delivered the approval document to Czech Electric Power Corp. on March 17.

After the government approved the tender, Czech Electric Power Corp. issued a tender guide to the three candidates-- KHNP, WEC, and EDF. It will receive tenders from the three companies by the end of November and submit the tender evaluation results to the government by 2023 and sign a contract in 2024.
