The World’s Fastest-growing Retailer

Coupang is the world's 7th-largest e-commerce company.

Coupang has been named the world’s fastest-growing retailer for the second consecutive year. The company also jumped to seventh place in the rankings of global e-commerce companies.

Coupang grew 66 percent annually on average from fiscal year 2015 to 2020, the fastest among the world's top 50 rapidly growing distributors, according to a report published by Deloitte Group Korea on March 14. Coupang also came first in 2021 with an average annual growth rate of 102.6 percent. The NYSE-listed company showed 90.9 percent growth on year in fiscal year 2020.

Deloitte Group announces the rankings every year in consideration of sales and growth rates of retailers around the world. The 2022 report is based on data available at the end of June 2021.

Coupang was ranked at 198th among the global top 250 distributors in the 2021 report. It was the first time that it was included in the list. It jumped to 98th place in one year. Considering its performance in fiscal 2021, Coupang's ranking is expected to soar next year.

In the global fast-growth retailer rankings, the top four players -- Coupang, Reliance Retail (India), Wayfair (the U.S.), and Mobile World (Vietnam) -- retained their spots in 2022. The annual average growth rate of the top 50 fast growing companies in the fiscal 2015-2020 period hit 18.3 percent, dwarfing that of all of the top 250 companies (4.7 percent).

In addition, Coupang ranked seventh among the global e-commerce companies. The top 250 distributors included supermarkets, discount stores, and specialty stores. Among them, e-commerce companies were Amazon.Com (2nd), JD.Com (9th), VIP Shop Holdings (67th), Qurate Retail Group (69th), Wayfair (71st), Otto (75th), and Coupang (98th).

As Coupang made great strides, a change was made in Korean companies’ rankings. Among the top 250 retailers selected by Deloitte, the number of Korean companies dropped by three to five from eight in 2021. They were in the order of E-Mart (57th), Lotte Shopping (76th), Coupang (98th), GS Retail (157th), and Homeplus (180th). Coupang outranked GS Retail and Homeplus. Shinsegae, Hotel Shilla, and E-Land World finished 203rd, 233rd, and 243rd in 2021, respectively, but they were wiped out from the list in 2022.
