Tapping into Talent Pool and Supply Chain

U.S. battery companies are setting up offices and research centers in Korea, China and Japan.

An increasing number of U.S. battery companies are setting up offices and research centers in South Korea, China and Japan.

For example, QuantumScape is building an all-solid-state battery R&D center in Kyoto, and it is scheduled to open this year. SES AI recently announced that it would set up its second overseas subsidiary in South Korea. The first overseas subsidiary of the lithium metal battery manufacturer is located in Shanghai, and the second is planning to employ 50 persons.

According to QuantumScape, Japan is home to a large number of experienced battery engineers and where it can effectively work together with major suppliers and research institutes. According to SES AI, South Korea has a robust supply chain in the electric vehicle battery industry.

Another reason is collaboration with automakers. QuantumScape is currently working together with Japanese automakers as well as Volkswagen. SES AI’s partners include Hyundai Motor Group, GM and Honda.
