Produces Hydrogen without Emitting Carbon Dioxide

SK ecoplant has successfully demonstrated eco-friendly hydrogen production using a solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) in cooperation with Bloom Energy and Bloom SK Fuel Cell.

SK ecoplant announced on Feb. 17 that it has succeeded in demonstrating eco-friendly hydrogen production using a solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) for the first time in Korea.

The method separates hydrogen from water without emitting carbon dioxide.

SK ecoplant built a 130kW SOEC facility in Bloom SK Pure Cell manufacturing plant in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, and began full-fledged eco-friendly hydrogen test production along with Bloom Energy and Bloom SK Fuel Cell, a joint venture between SK ecoplant and Bloom Energy.

Water electrolysis produces oxygen and hydrogen by decomposing water with electricity. Although general electricity was used for this demonstration, if renewable energy produced by solar and wind power is used in the future, green hydrogen production without carbon emissions will be possible throughout the entire process.

SOEC has come into the spotlight as a next-generation innovative technology due to its excellent hydrogen production efficiency. But Korea lags behind in SOEC due to high technological barriers.

In addition to this Gumi plant demonstration project, SK ecoplant plans to further upgrade SOEC technology by conducting additional demonstration projects in Korea. In addition, it plans to secure the world’s most efficient green hydrogen production technology and prepare a bridgehead for entering the global hydrogen market by further strengthening cooperation with Bloom Energy to develop SOEC application technologies.
