Develops 1.5-gigapascal martensite steel plate

Hyundai Steel is set to enter the ultra-high strength cold-rolled steel sheet market for vehicles, which has been monopolized by European and American steelmakers.

The company has recently completed the development of a 1.5-gigapascal martensite (GPa MS) steel plate. Gigapascal is a unit that measures the compressive strength and tensile strength of a material. One GPa refers to the endurance of a load of 100 kg or more on a one-square-millimeter area. Martensite is the strongest tissue among several microstructures of iron and can be made through rapid cooling.

Hyundai Steel's newly developed steel sheet offers improved flatness and crack resistance compared to existing products. Hyundai Steel named it “Premium 1.5GPa Martensite Steel Plate” to differentiate it from other products.

The 1.5GPa MS steel sheet has not been widely used as an automobile material because it is difficult to maintain flatness in the rapid cooling process and cracks are caused by hydrogen penetration during use.
