Due to Automotive Semiconductor Shortage

Hyundai Motor Co. suffered a 12.1 percent drop in auto sales in January.

In January, Hyundai Motor Co. took a hit from production disruptions ignited by poor semiconductor supply, chalking up a double-digit decrease in sales. The suspension of the company's Asan plant to prepare for production of electric vehicles also contributed to the drop in sales.

Hyundai Motor announced on Feb. 3 that its global sales in January reached 282,204 units -- 46,205 units in Korea and 235,999 units overseas.

Compared to the same month of 2021, domestic sales fell 22.3 percent and overseas sales 9.8 percent. Thus, the automaker logged a 12.1 percent drop in sales overall.

In domestic sales, the shutdown of the Asan plant for IONIQ 6 production had a significant impact. The Asan plant was shut down for one month from Jan. 3 to 28 due to facility construction.
