First Step in SMR Project Successfully Completed

NuScale Power has successfully completed the first step in its small modular reactor (SMR) project in the U.S. state of Idaho.

Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS) announced on Feb. 1 that it completed a construction site assessment in Idaho with regard to NuScale Power’s small modular reactor (SMR) project. UAMPS is planning to submit an application for SMR construction and operation to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in early 2024.

This means the first step in the project has been successfully completed by NuScale Power, in which Samsung C&T and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction (DHIC) invest. Samsung C&T invested US$20 million in NuScale Power in July last year and recently decided to increase the investment by US$30 million.

DHIC invested US$44 million in 2019 and US$60 million in July last year. At present, the total private investment in public equity regarding the project is approximately US$211 million and DHIC’s contracts in the project are estimated to add up to at least three trillion won.

The project is to build up to 12 reactor modules, 77 MW each, so that 924 MW of electricity can be generated. NuScale Power is aiming to successfully finish the first unit construction in the United States and then enter the North American, European and Asian markets.
