To Upgrade Search Services

Naver has recruited young scholars to upgrade its AI-based search services.

Naver has recruited young scholars, including a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), to upgrade its AI-powered search services.

The company announced on Jan. 24 that it has recently recruited Professor Kim Yoon-hyung of MIT and Professor Karl Stratos of Rutgers University as Naver Scholars.

Naver Scholars is a program in which professors and researchers from universities and colleges and research institutes located in the United States and Europe can participate in the development of Naver technologies and services while serving at their institutions. The two professors recruited this time will develop next-generation AI technologies and search services at Naver Search US, an AI center in the United States.

Professor Kim is currently serving as an assistant professor at the MIT after obtaining a doctorate in computer science from Harvard University. Kim published a paper that applied convolution neural network (CNN) technology, part of deep learning technology, to natural language processing (NLP). The paper attracted much attention from academia and the AI industry. More than 12,000 articles cited the paper worldwide.

Professor Carl Stratos, a Ph.D. in computer science at the University of Columbia, is also an expert in AI. Currently, he is an assistant professor at Rutgers University and is studying the development of unsupervised learning methods and knowledge use models. Stratos has risen to international fame by serving as chairman of the machine learning sector at top-tier academic societies (ACL, ENMLP, and NAACL) in the field of natural language processing.

Meanwhile, the two professors will work together with Kim Yong-beom, a senior leader who joined Naver in September 2021 to enhance the competitiveness of AI technology and search services. Kim, who leads the development of AI technology, is considered a world-class expert in the field of interactive artificial intelligence (conversational AI). He orchestrated the development of core AI technologies for Microsoft Cotana and Amazon Alexa.
