Smartphones Double as Car Keys

Apple's digital key technology is expected to be applied to Hyundai Motor’s Genesis and other models.

Digital keys based on Apple’s smart devices such as iPhones and Apple Watch are expected to be applied to Hyundai Motor’s Genesis and other models before long. Apple’s digital key function has been compatible with BMW vehicles only.

Bloomberg reported on Jan. 16 (U.S. local time) that Apple’s digital key “CarKey” option will be installed in Hyundai Motor and Genesis models starting this summer. Although it is not yet clear which models will be provided with this function, Bloomberg noted that near field communication (NFC) technology for digital keys has been applied to the IONIQ 5, an electric vehicle, and other models.

Although a vehicle remote lock control function using a smartphone has already been provided, CarKey enables drivers to use smartphones like physical keys. You can open the door of a car and start it if you put your smartphone or Apple Watch close to it, or even without taking the device out of your pocket. This service can be used with devices using U1 ultra-wideband chips, such as the iPhone 11 and higher models.

Bloomberg reported if the partnership is forged, it will be an unexpected development since Hyundai Motor and Apple failed to agree on Apple Car cooperation about a year ago.
