Samsung Electronics’ quantum dot (QD)-organic light emitting diode (OLED) TV has nabbed the Best of Innovation award at CES 2022, which kicks off in Las Vegas of the United States on Jan. 5 (local time). Samsung Electronics has decided not to display the product at this year's CES, but industry experts say it is unusual that a CES Best of Innovation award winner is not displayed.

In 2021, Samsung Electronics’ U.S. subsidiary recommended the Samsung 65-inch QD-Display TV model as a candidate for the Best of Innovation award at CES 2022. Usually, judges review candidates for the CES award with data and materials submitted by participating companies and without real products. Samsung Electronics also delivered QD-OLED TV data and materials to CES organizers at the time.

Based on the data and materials, Samsung 65-inch QD-display TV was chosen for the Best of Innovation award at CES 2022. “Samsung's 65-inch QD-Display TV is the world's frist true RGB self-emitting Quantum Dot OLED display -- revolutionizing TV by combining the contrast levels of REG OLED with the color and brightness of quantum dots for ultimate visuals,” the organizers said regarding the Samsung TV. “The QD-display TV combines a groundbreaking new QD-OLED display with Samsung's gorgeous Infinity One Design and interactive Object Tracking Sound (OTS) technology.”

The organizers also said that the Samsung TV is "built with 2022 Neo Quantum Processor for superior image quality, while boasting a 144 Hz refresh rate and  four HDMI 2.1 inputs -- both wins for gamers.” "With respectable visuals, sound, and speed, the QD-OLED TV represents the next frontier in home entertainment," they added.

Although the QD-Display TV picked up CES’s Best of Innovation award, Samsung Electronics has decided not to display the model at CES 2022. Industry sources say that while the amount of QD-OLED panels supplied from Samsung Display is absolutely small, Samsung Electronics is trying to focus on current flagship TV models -- QLED TVs and Neo QLED TVs. A QLED display was first released in 2017 as a product that scaled up color reproduction by applying quantum dot film to screens of LCD TVs. Neo QLED is a TV that applied mini LEDs, which are smaller than existing LEDs, to backlights of LCD TVs.
