Korea's First AI Semiconductor

SK Group’s exhibition booth at CES 2022

SK Telecom announced on Jan. 2 that it will introduce the Sapeon, an artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductor developed for the first time in Korea, at CES 2022, the world’s largest IT and home appliance exhibition to run in Las Vegas from Jan. 5 to 7 (local time).

AI semiconductors are non-memory semiconductors that perform large-scale operations at high speeds and low power and are the brain of AI. The Sapeon is eco-friendly as it consumes 80 percent of power compared to other GPUs and its deep learning operation speed is 1.5 times faster than GPUs and its price is about half the level of GPU prices, the company stressed.

SK Telecom will set up a joint exhibition booth with SK Inc., SK Innovation, SK Hynix, SK E&S and SK Ecoplant at the upcoming CES and showcase various green ICT technologies. The theme is the 2030 SK Net-Zero Declaration.

Here, SK Telecom will also introduce single LAN technology that reduces power consumption by about 53 percent by integrating and upgrading 3G and LTE network equipment. Earlier, SK Telecom secured carbon emission rights for the first time in the Korean telecommunication industry with this technology.

SK Telecom will also showcase the metaverse platform Ifland which can replace carbon-inducing offline activities online and the Happy Habit Program to spread the culture of using non-disposable multiple-use cups. Also on exhibit will be T-Map Mobility’s driving habit analysis service that reduces carbon emissions by analyzing driver’s driving data such as speeding, rapid acceleration and deceleration.
