The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced on Dec. 16 that it succeeded in controlling the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology's smart factory in Gyeongsan from its lab in Daejeon City.

The distance between the two regions is approximately 280 kilometers. The real-time smart factory control was carried out based on 5G and wired networks. It is unique in that existing 5G-based smart factory operations are intra-factory equipment control.

The ETRI developed an industrial IoT system based on 5G standards and the system supports remote and real-time production management and robot control, real-time production facility control and management, real-time process monitoring based on remote VR, and wireless sensor-based remote process monitoring.

The system was used along with the Korea Advanced Research Network (KOREN), which is a wired network. As a result, the communication between the two regions reached 10 milliseconds and that in the factory reached approximately 3 milliseconds, which can be regarded as a 300 percent improvement.

The ETRI is aiming to demonstrate the same service between the factory in South Korea and the University of Oulu in Finland early next year.
