Eco-friendly New Technology

GS Engineering & Construction (GS E&C) has developed an eco-friendly technology to repair water pipes without digging ground.

GS E&C announced on Nov. 11 that it has received a New Technology Certificate from the Ministry of Environment for its non-extrusion water pipe repair technique, which was jointly developed with Duksan Construction Co.,

This method inserts a liner, which consists of a hot melt layer and a PE film layer of GS E&C's own development, into existing water supply pipes without excavating ground and then heats the liner to attach it on the inside surface of the pipes.

Until now, the main method to improve water supply pipes has been to replace old pipes with new ones. However, this approach is costly and there is a high risk of safety accidents.

The non-extrusion repair method is expected to solve most of these problems. The core element of this method is hot melt. A current construction method causes a phenomenon where hot melt hardens after penetrating nonwoven fabrics and generates bad odors. A hot melt material developed by GS E&C solved this problem.

The use of the non-extraction repair method is expected to cut construction period by 30 percent compared to the current excavation method and construction costs by 39 percent.
