Collaboration on Korea's First Aircraft Carrier

A concept of the Korean-type light aircraft carrier under development by HHI

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has forged a strategic partnership with Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) to complete the project of developing South Korea's first aircraft carrier.

The two companies announced on Oct. 19 that they have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for cooperation in drawing up the basic design of a Korean-type light aircraft carrier.

The MOU was signed at Seoul Airport, where Seoul International Aerospace and Defense Industry Exhibition 2021 (Seoul ADEX 2021) is underway.

The two companies agreed to cooperate in the operation and control of aircraft, military support systems, training systems and tests and evaluations.

The MOU will help HHI secure the core technologies in the operation of aircraft, as KAI is the only fighter manufacturer in Korea. It has also signed a partnership deal with Britain's Babcock in August. Babcock played a key role in building the Queen Elizabeth, the U.K.'s latest light aircraft carrier.

KAI has global competitiveness in simulation production capabilities, which are needed to improve aircraft operation skills. The company is expected to play a major role in fostering aircraft carrier and aircraft operators and increasing aircraft carrier operation capabilities.
