Pre-eminent Scholar on Nanoporous Materials

Professor Ryoo Ryong

The Korea Institute of Energy Technology (KENTECH) announced on Oct. 20 that it has finalized the appointment of Professor Ryoo Ryong, a world-renowned scholar in the field of functional nanoporous materials, as a chair professor.

Professor Ryoo obtained a doctorate degree from Stanford University and has been working as a distinguished professor of the Department of Chemistry at KAIST since 2008. Since 2012, Ryoo has been the head of the Nanomaterial and Chemical Reaction Research Group of the Institute of Basic Science (IBS) and has been leading research in the nano field in Korea.

Professor Ryoo has focused his research interest in the synthesis of new functional nanoporous materials such as hierarchical zeolites, mesoporous silicas, carbons, and organic-inorganic composite materials that can be used for advanced applications in the production of alternative energy sources and in green chemical processes. He has published about 300 papers related to his research fields, which have been cited in 45,000 academic journals.

In particular, Professor Ryoo is included in the "Highly Cited Researchers" list published by Clarivate Analytics. In 2014, he became the first Korean scientist to belong to the top 0.01 percent of scientists by citation. Thomson Reuters nominated him for its 2014 Nobel Citation Laureates in Chemistry.
