Ranked 14th in EBI's Brand Survey

Samsung Electronics was ranked 14th in the Global Top 100 Brand Corporations 2021, which was released by the European Brand Institute (EBI), a brand consulting firm based in Vienna, Austria, on Oct. 4. Samsung Electronics was the only Korean company included in the list.

Samsung Electronics' brand value was estimated at about 51,428 million euros, up 14 percent from a year earlier. In addition, its ranking rose by six notches from 20th in 2020. It placed 23rd in 2017, 19th in 2018 and 21st in 2019.

Samsung Electronics came behind Chinese companies such as Alibaba (5th), Tencent (11th), and Huawei (13th).

Huawei recorded about 51.9 billion euros in brand value in 2021, up 20 percent from 2020, even though its global smartphone sales plunged due to U.S. government sanctions. 

Intel of the United States, a rival of Samsung Electronics in the semiconductor industry, finished 21st, down by five notches from 2020. Intel's brand value was about 42.2 billion euros, down 10 percent from a year earlier.

The top ranker of 2021 is Apple of the United States, which also ranked first in the world's market capitalization standings. The U.S. IT giant has never lost its No. 1 spot since 2011. Apple was followed by Amazon (194.6 billion euros), Google (190.5 billion euros), and Microsoft (178.6 billion euros). Among non-U.S. companies, Alibaba of China had the highest brand value.

Tesla came in 27th in 2021 with a brand value of 35.6 billion euros, up 43 percent from a year ago, the highest increase rate among the top 100 companies. In terms of growth rate, Amazon (39 percent), Softbank (25 percent), Nintendo (24 percent), and Tencent (23 percent) made the top five along with Tesla.

By country, based on headquarters’ locations, the United States had the largest number of 47 companies on the list. The number of U.S. brands dropped by one from 2020, but their combined brand value hit 2.14 trillion euros, making up 61.4 percent of the total. Europe then recorded 712.7 billion euros with 33 brands, while China recorded 445.3 billion euros with 12 brands. Japan had six companies in the list, including Toyota which came in 22nd.
