In Partnership with Truwin Co.

Hanwha Systems will move into the automotive semiconductor manufacturing business by partnering with Truwin Co.

Hanwha Systems will make inroads into the automotive electronic parts and semiconductor manufacturing business by partnering with Truwin Co., a Korean company specializing in automotive sensors. The two companies are planning to supply some of their semiconductors to Hyundai Motor Group.

Hanwha Systems and Truwin signed a joint venture agreement at Hanwha Building in Seoul on Sept. 15 for the development and manufacture of infrared (IR) sensors and sensors for vehicle parts.

The joint venture is planning to produce microelectromechanical system (MEMS) semiconductors for vehicles such as infrared (IR) sensors and electronic equipment sensors, which are key components of night visions called “the eyes of self-driving cars.” Its main goal is to develop and produce three types of state-of-the-art IR sensors and automotive electronic sensors after building MEMS semiconductor facilities.

The capital of the joint venture company is 36 billion won, with Hanwha Systems holding a 51 percent stake and Truwin the remainder. An MEMS semiconductor fab will be built on the premises of a Truewin plant in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon. The two companies aim to produce vehicle electrical sensors at the fab by 2023.

Distance IR sensors are installed in night visions, an integral part of self-driving vehicles’ identification systems and three kinds of sensors applied to various parts in vehicles are magnetic induction proximity sensors (EPSs), IPSs and high temperature sensors (HTSs).
