The World's First Level 4 Robotaxi

Ioniq 5-based robotaxi

Hyundai Motor Group unveiled the design of its first robotaxi on Aug. 31. The model based on its Ioniq 5 is slated to be exhibited at IAA Mobility 2021, which will kick off in Munich on Sept. 7. The first Level 4 robotaxi in the world is expected to be used for ride-hailing services in the United States starting from 2023.

The vehicle is equipped with 30 sensors and the sensors are capable of covering a distance of up to 300 meters for driverless driving. In addition, the vehicle can be remotely supported by a control center to deal with sudden unexpected situations.

The vehicle comes with various human-machine interface elements, too. The elements include a dashboard display for customer identification and a camera sensor for seat belt confirmation and belongings notice.

Earlier, the South Korean government announced that Level 4 self-driving cars would be put to commercial use in South Korea in 2027. The plan can be put forward by four years if the robotaxi debuts in the United States in 2023.
