Samsung Records Market Share of 31%

LG Signature OLED 8K TV at CES 2020

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics accounted for half of the global TV market in terms of sales in the first half of this year. They increased their sales despite production setbacks caused by COVID-19.

According to market research firm Omdia, a total of 99.11 million TVs were sold worldwide in the first half, up 7.4 percent from a year ago. The total sales are US$54.286 billion, up 36.1 percent from a year ago.

In terms of sales, Samsung Electronics recorded a market share of 31 percent, followed by LG Electronics (19 percent), Sony (9.3 percent), TCL (7.4 percent) and Hisense (7.3 percent).

Samsung Electronics sold 21.03 million TVs in the first half of this year whereas it sold 19.07 million in the first half of last year. The sales volume of its high-end TVs such as Neo QLED reached approximately four million units with a year-on-year increase of more than 46 percent.

LG Electronics increased its H1 sales volume from 10.78 million to 13.56 million units. These days, the company is increasing OLED TV supply with the LG Display plant in Guangzhou increasing its OLED panel supply. In the second quarter of this year, LG Electronics’ OLED TV shipments hit an all-time high of 945,600 units, up three-fold from a year ago.

In the first and second quarters, 51.25 million and 47.85 million TVs were sold worldwide, respectively. Samsung Electronics sold 9.41 million in the second quarter of this year after having sold 8.62 million in the second quarter of 2020 and 11.61 million in the first quarter of this year. LG Electronics’ Q2 2021 shipments totaled 6.28 million, more than its Q2 2020 shipments (4.46 million) and less than its Q1 2021 shipments (7.28 million).
