Hyundai Mobis surpassed 10 trillion won in sales in the second quarter of this year as sales related to electric vehicles reached an all-time high. This is the first time the company has exceeded 10 trillion won in sales in the second quarter.

Hyundai Mobis posted 10.2851 trillion won in sales and 563.6 billion won in operating profit in the second quarter. Compared to the same period of 2020, they increased by 36.5 percent and 234 percent, respectively. The main growth driver was electric vehicle parts that stood at 1.3637 trillion won. The figure was up 37.8 percent from the same period of 2020. It has surpassed one trillion won for four consecutive quarters since the third quarter of 2020.

Hyundai Mobis saw sales of components for eco-friendly cars increase. It won an order for infotainment products from North American automakers in the second quarter. It is planning to secure new customers for core parts of future cars such as automotive electronics, lamps, chassis and electric motors to attain its order intake goal of US$2.88 billion in 2021.

Hyundai Mobis has been operating the world's largest production line for hydrogen fuel cell systems since the second half of 2017. It built its first factory dedicated to eco-friendly car parts in Chungju, Korea in 2013. It is also going to operate core parts factories for eco-friendly cars in Ulsan and Pyeongtaek. Hyundai Mobis is producing key components such as drive systems, battery systems, mounted chargers and electricity controllers at these factories.

Hyundai Mobis is strengthening its research and development in the electric vehicles and autonomous driving fields after announcing its transformation into a software company. It is also trying to secure technologies to develop self-driving independent sensors. In order to develop high-performance sensors that can identify external driving environments, it will strengthen cooperation with foreign companies, universities and colleges and startups. It is working with Korea's leading startups in the development of deep learning-based camera sensors and has formed a strategic partnership with Velodine to develop light detection and ranging (LIDAR) sensors.

Hyundai Mobis is building a research and development network involving major regions such as North America, Europe, China and India, and domestic bases such as the Yongin Technology Research Institute, the Uiwang Research Institute, and the Seosan Driving Test Center. In Seosan, the company completed a 1.09-million-square-meter driving test site in 2017.
