To Enhance Competitiveness

LS Cable and System loads submarine cables on a ship at Donghae Port, Gangwon Province.

LS Cable and System is the only company in Korea with a submarine cable production plant. It has become the only cable company in Korea to have a cable-laying vessel. The company’s vessel is the largest of its kind in Korea.

LS Cable and System announced on Aug. 11 that it will secure an 8,000-ton cable-laying vessel called "GL2030." The company is planning to strengthen its submarine work capability with the cable-laying vessel and proactively prepare for the offshore wind power business, which is growing rapidly at home and abroad. The cable-laying vessel will be put into operations for domestic undersea cable projects beginning from the first half of next year.

LS Cable and System has become the only cable company in Korea that has both an undersea cable factory and a cable-laying vessel. Large undersea cables are tens to hundreds of kilometers long and cannot be transported by land. So they must be shipped directly from factories to large ships at ports. LS Cable and System says only a few companies in the world have high-voltage submarine cable production and laying capabilities. In Korea, Taihan Cable & Solution announced earlier this year a plan to build an undersea cable factory near the sea, with groundbreaking planned within this year.

The cable-laying vessel features a high-precision ship position control system. LS Cable and System expects the vessel to elevate Korea’s competitiveness in laying undersea cables to a higher level. LS Cable and System’s participation in the undersea cable business in Southeast Asia and East Asia is expected to expand in the future as direct ownership of the cable-laying ship will allow the company to adjust its work schedule more flexibly.
