Domestic Brands Suffer a Drop

Mercedes-Benz E-Class

CarIsYou Data Lab announced on Aug. 3 that a total of 159,043 cars were newly registered in South Korea last month, down 4.8 percent from the previous month and down 8.6 percent from a year ago.

The figure is divided into 134,158 domestic and 24,885 imported cars. The figures fell 13.1 percent and rose 26.4 percent year on year, respectively.

Tesla came in first in May and June, but the number of newly registered Tesla vehicles dropped to 22 in July due to an undersupply. Meanwhile, the new registration of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class jumped 117.4 percent from the previous month to 2,567. The runner-up is the BMW 5 Series (1,601), followed by the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (1,379) and the Audi A6 (1,274).

By foreign brand, Mercedes-Benz came in first with 7,094 new registrations, followed by BMW (6,024), Audi (2,634), Volvo (1,153) and Lexus (1,027). Tesla slid from 3rd to 23rd.
