Samsung Electronics may lose its No. 1 position in the global smartphone market to China’s Xiaomi.

Global market research firm Canalys said Xiaomi was ranked second in the global smartphone market in the second quarter of this year with a 17 percent share, which was only 2 percentage points below Samsung’s 19 percent. Its growth rate was nearly 83 percent.

Market expectations for the next iPhone, which is to come out in September, are also growing. Bloomberg reported that Apple will increase the shipment of the iPhone's next series from 75 million units to 90 million. Analysts say that Apple is showing strong confidence in its next iPhone model.

In response, Samsung Electronics is planning to focus on popularizing foldable phones. It will hold a Galaxy Unpack event on Aug. 11 and release two new foldable phones with much lower prices.
