First Mini-LED TV

LG QNED MiniLED TV

LG Electronics announced on June 30 that it is set to release the LG QNED MiniLED TV, a premium LCD TV, in the global market. The new product’s name has “QNED,” a term that is used for a next-generation product under development by Samsung Display. This is why some market watchers say that LG Electronics took aim at Samsung Electronics, the world's No. 1 TV maker.

LG QNED MiniLED TV uses mini LEDs as the light sources. They are much smaller in size than the backlights of existing LCD TVs. Instead, the number of light sources increased significantly. LG Electronics explained that its latest TV can express more accurate and rich colors than existing LCT TVs.

LG QNED TVs will come in seven models depending on the resolution, size and specifications. They will be released first in North America this week and then sequentially in major global markets such as Japan, Europe and Korea. They will go on sale in Korea sometime in the middle of next month. They will retail at between 5.09 million won and 16.8 million won for 8K models and 3.19 million won and 8.2 million won for 4K models.

Coincidentally, QNED is a term also used by Samsung Display for its new TV panels. Samsung's QNED stands for quantum nano-emitting diode. It uses a long stick-shaped blue LED called nano-rod as a light emitting device. Unlike organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), it emits light as an inorganic material.

Industry insiders say that LG Electronics has decided to use the term QNED because it is conscious of the new TV panel being developed by Samsung Display. Both LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics have already registered QNED as their trademarks.
