LG Energy Solution is stepping up its efforts to accelerate its penetration of the U.S. market. This is because it successfully has supplied batteries for Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) to the market, following batteries for electric vehicles.

LG Energy Solution announced on June 17that it recently supplied batteries to a 1.2GWh power grid ESS of U.S. power company Vista operating in the Moss Landing area of northeastern Monterey County, California of the United States. The ESS is the world's largest single ESS with a capacity to supply power to about 225,000 households during peak hours in California.

Since 2020, Vistra has been working on a project to replace retired thermal power generation facilities at California's Moss Landing Natural Gas Power Plant with renewable energy such as ESSs for electric power generation.

The batteries supplied for this project this time are TR 1300 Rack, a new product for ESSs from LG Energy Solution. This product loaded with high-performance battery cells can be used on two-stage battery racks, which increases space efficiency and feature higher energy density per unit area.

The safety of the product has been strengthened. TR 1300 Rack went through a safety test on fire from a thermal run away of a battery-based energy storage system from UL, a global safety certification company and explained that fire did not spread to adjacent battery racks.
