Fourth Shutdown Caused by Chip Shortage

Hyundai Motor's Alabama plant

Hyundai Motor Co. will temporarily stop operating its Asan plant in Korea and Alabama plant in the United States again due to the ongoing automotive semiconductor shortage.

Hyundai Motor said it will close down its Sonata and Grandeur production lines at its Asan plant on June 16. But an engine production line will operate normally at the plant. This will mark the fourth time that the automaker shuts down plants due to a shortage of semiconductors.

The Alabama plant will be locked down from the same day to June 18. The suspension of operations will be limited to the car assembly lines. Production of engines and delivery of finished cars to Kia's Georgia plant will be carried out normally.

The suspension of domestic and foreign factories is blamed on a lack of global semiconductors for cars. In the case of the Alabama plant, production will resume on June 21, but its production volume will be inevitably cut as the plant is scheduled to close down for the summer vacation from June 26 to July 11.
