A Car Without a Steering Wheel

ETRI has developed a Level 4 self-driving car without a steering wheel.

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute announced on June 9 that it has developed a Level 4 self-driving car without a steering wheel and initiated shuttle bus operation based on the technology.

The high-performance AI algorithm used in the bus processes information from cameras and LiDAR sensors in real time to recognize surrounding environments and objects and decide where to drive on its own. A person in the vehicle can control it by voice commands and the vehicle ensures safety even in changing situations such as a traffic light-less intersection.

In addition, the car comes with a transparent OLED display so that various types of information can be obtained using the institute’s augmented reality technology, 8K virtual reality broadcasting, and so on.

In its research project, the institute utilized 100,000 kilometers of domestic traffic environment data along with 200 terabytes of learning data. The institute is aiming to commercialize the technology in 2027 at the latest.
