A Solution for Environmental Contamination

Engineering plastic produced by Samyang Corp.

Samyang Corp. announced on May 25 that it would develop an isosorbide-based biodegradable polycarbonate and commercial components based on the polycarbonate at the same time.

At present, physical polycarbonate recycling has no merit in terms of cost, and it has been buried or burned after use. These disposal methods have led to toxic substance generation and environmental pollution.

Samyang is the first South Korean company that succeeded in producing polycarbonates on its own. Since this achievement in 1991, the company has developed advanced polycarbonate products, including flame-retardant and transparent ones as well as highly heat-resistant ones and silicone polycarbonates highly improved in terms of low-temperature impact strength, chemical resistance, and so on.

In 2014, Samyang developed a technique for commercial isosorbide production for the first time in South Korea and for the second time worldwide. The starch-based chemical compound is a biomaterial capable of replacing BPA as a main polycarbonate ingredient.
