To Enhance Development Efficiency

Samsung Display executive Kim Yong-jo explains the use of AI technology in designing panels.

Samsung Display announced on May 20 that the company is boosting its efficiency in developing panels by introducing AI technology in key areas of panel development.

For instance, the company is using AI in designing organic materials for OLEDs. Previously, engineers designed materials by changing molecular structures on their own to finding the one that shows desired characteristics.

These days, however, engineers just set desired characteristic values and then, AI finds the correct answers by simulating many combinations. AI technology designs material structures based on simulations and verifies them one by one through direct tests, a work that has been previously done by humans.

It takes only 30 seconds to design 100 kinds of molecular structures of organic materials and derive characteristic values through AI. As AI carries out numerous simulations in a short time, engineers can focus on high value-added tasks, boosting productivity.

On top of that, as an increase in display resolutions makes panel circuit design tougher, engineers actively apply AI to panel circuit design.

When designing low-resolution panels, engineers are able to obtain desired results through repetitive drawing tasks. But high-resolution panels such as 4K and 8K ones stand a strong chance of malfunction such as circuit interference so it takes a lot of time to produce desired results.

Based on these achievements, Samsung Display gave an online lecture under the theme of "AI and Machine Learning for Display" at the Display Week 2021 hosted by the Society for Information Display (SID).
