Morgan Stanley Holds Largest Share of Short Selling

Foreign securities companies are active in short selling of Korean stocks.

The Korea Exchange announced on May 16 that 10 and 17 entities reported themselves for the first 10 days of this month as those having large short selling balances in KOSPI and KOSDAQ, respectively.

The large balance means at least 0.5 percent of the total listed shares. Any entity with such a balance must report itself. In KOSPI, the number of such entities is currently 35, including 10 that were reported in the past two weeks. In KOSDAQ, the figures are 86 and 17.

Those reports include 10 of Morgan Stanley, which reported a large short selling balance in the three KOSPI companies including Samsung Heavy Industries and Shin Poong Pharm and the seven KOSDAQ companies including Seegene and Cafe24.

Goldman Sachs reported a large balance in four KOSDAQ companies, Macquarie Bank in three KOSPI companies, and UBS AG in three KOSDAQ companies. In addition, J.P. Morgan, Merrill Lynch, Credit Suisse and Barclays reported a large short selling balance in two, two, one and one, respectively.

The total reports are 121, including 33 from Morgan Stanley. It is followed by Merrill Lynch (31), UBS AG (15), Credit Suisse (11) and Goldman Sachs (nine).
