To Visit U.S. as Member of KORUS Summit Business Delegation

SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won

SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won is scheduled to visit Georgia of the United States around May 24 (U.S. local time) to check out the construction site of SK Innovation’s electric vehicle (EV) battery plant.

Chey will visit the United States as a member of the business delegation to a Korea-U.S. summit on May 21. As Chey doubles as the chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, he is expected to promote economic diplomacy between Korea and the United States by meeting with U.S. political and business leaders during his visit.

Chey is expected to play an important role as one of the key agenda items of the upcoming Korea-U.S. summit is cooperation in semiconductors, batteries, and bio-tech. SK Group has affiliates that are engaged in these areas, such as SK Hynix, a major chipmaker, SK Innovation which is building an EV battery plant in the United States, and SK Bioscience which signed a contract with Novavax to produce its COVID-19 vaccines

Chey will visit the construction site of the battery plant in Georgia during his visit. SK Innovation is currently building its first and second plants in Georgia with a combined annual capacity of 21.5GWh, an amount for 430,000 EVs.

A meeting with Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is also scheduled. Earlier, Kemp appealed for support for SK Innovation in a battery dispute with LG Energy Solution. Chey will express his gratitude to Kemp and the community.

SK Innovation has invested 1.5 trillion won in building the two plants in Georgia and is planning to invest a total of 3 trillion won by next year. The company plans to make additional investments to build its third and fourth plants by 2025. "When all these plant are completed as planned, they will create about 6,000 jobs in the region," said Kim Joon, president of SK Innovation.
