Hyundai Mobis has decided to sharpen its competitiveness in intellectual property rights by purchasing patents from renowned Korean colleges and research institutes.

Hyundai Mobis announced on May 9 that it recently signed an MOU with Yonsei University's Industry-Academia Cooperation Group for cooperation in ICT technology.

The main content of the agreement is to establish a mid- to long-term research and development cooperation system including purchasing patents for key future mobility technologies such as autonomous driving, electrification, and connectivity.

Hyundai Mobis has recently analyzed patent technologies from famous universities and research institutes in Korea. Based on the analysis, it is pushing to purchase promising technologies from Yonsei University, including communication standards, artificial intelligence, and battery control technologies.

Hyundai Mobis plans to secure some 12,000 patents by 2025, about three times larger than its current level. The annual average of the company’s patent applications has increased by about 50 percent over the past three years.

As patented original technology grows in importance in the future car industry, Hyundai Mobis will not only encourage its employees to invent, but expand its patent portfolio by purchasing technologies from industry-academia cooperation institutions.
