A Tram That Produces Clean Air

Hyundai Rotem's hydrogen tram concept car

Hyundai Rotem unveiled Korea’s first hydrogen tram concept car at its Changwon plant in South Gyeongsang Province on April 19. The hydrogen tram can run 150 kilometers on a single charge. It takes only 10 minutes to 15 minutes to fully charging the hydrogen tram. It emits less noise than ordinary trains,

Hydrogen trams are an eco-friendly mobility machine using hydrogen fuel cells. They are emerging as a next-generation urban transportation means because they do not emit fine dust and harmful gases.

They are a type of tram that travels on a railroad with hydrogen fuel cells as an energy source. Hydrogen trams are an eco-friendly mobility means that purifies air by filtering fine dust. According to Hyundai Rotem, a single tram produces 107.6 kg of clean air when it runs for an hour, an amount that about 107 adults require for an hour.

In addition, hydrogen trams can be used for mass transportation, but unlike subways, they do not require excavation work. Some models do not require electric wire construction work either.

The hydrogen tram concept car was developed through a regulatory sandbox, which allowed Hyundai Rotem to develop the product without a driving test required for commercialization. Although the tram has not undergone a driving test with passengers aboard because the verification process has not been completed, it is highly likely to be exported abroad soon. Hyundai Rotem will launch a verification test this year and promote localization of core technologies to develop a tram for overseas markets. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy plans to invest 29 billion won in the project over the next three years.
