Samsung's’ Share Falls from 20.9% to 19.6% in 2020

Samsung Electronics’ smartphone shipments fell 13.8 percent to 254.3 million units last year.

Market research firm Strategy Analytics reported on Feb. 23 that the global smartphone shipments totaled 1,299.9 million units last year, down 8 percent from a year ago, and Samsung Electronics’ fell 13.8 percent to 254.3 million units.

On the other hand, Apple’s increased 4.1 percent to 205.5 million, Xiaomi’s increased 16.7 percent to 145.7 million, Vivo’s increased from 106.5 million to 111.4 million, and Realme’s rose from 24.9 million to 43.3 million.

In the global smartphone market, Samsung Electronics’ share fell from 20.9 percent to 19.6 percent in 2020 after having reached 21.1 percent in 2017 and 20.4 percent in 2018. Meanwhile, Apple raised its market share from 14.3 percent to 15.8 percent from 2017 to 2020 and Xiaomi almost doubled its market share from 6.1 percent to 11.2 percent in that period.

Samsung Electronics’ sluggish performance is because competition is intensifying in the stagnant market. Apple is still dominating the high-end market segment and the rest of the market is being led by Chinese manufacturers.
