A Fire-resistant Insulation Material

Lotte Chemical’s semi-non-flammable urethane insulation

Lotte Chemical announced on Feb. 18 that it has developed a material for semi-non-flammable urethane insulation containing high-purity isophthalic acid (PIA) for the first time in Korea. The material hampers the spread of a fire.

The new urethane insulation is a semi-non-flammable product that does not burn well compared to other urethane insulation. It can reduce smoke from a fire by about 30 percent, reducing fire smoke damage.

In October 2020, the KOTITI Testing & Research Institute, which analyzes pollutant emissions, verified that the material does not emit formaldehyde. In August and November in 2020, the Korea Conformity Laboratories (KCL) certified the product’s adequacy as an insulation material.

PIA is a raw material for PET bottles and paints and is produced exclusively by Lotte Chemical in Korea. Lotte Chemical has the world's largest PIA production volume of 520,000 tons per year.
