A 13,000-TEU container ship built by Samsung Heavy Industries

Samsung Heavy Industries announced on Feb. 15 that it has won an order for five 15,000-TEU LNG-powered container ships from a client in Asia. The total contract value is 781.2 billion won. The ships will be delivered sequentially by July 2023.

The vessels to be built are eco-friendly ships that use LNG as their main fuel to satisfy regulations on harmful gas emissions such as sulfur oxides and carbon dioxide. In addition, they will be loaded with various fuel saving devices and SVESSEL, a smartship solution of Samsung Heavy Industries’ own development.

Samsung Heavy Industries has so far won a total of 22 LNG fuel propulsion vessels including shuttle tankers, S-MAX ships, and VLCCs.

Its order intake in 2021 totals 10 ships valued at US$7.8 billion, which amounts to 17 percent of its order target for 2021. The list includes one LNG carrier and nine container ships, of which five are LNG-powered.
