DRAM Dominance

The market share of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix is on the rise in the global DRAM market. According to DRAMeXchange’s August 17 report, their combined percentage increased from 65 percent to 68 percent between the first and second quarters of this year, while those of their U.S. and Taiwanese counterparts stood at 25.7 percent and 6.3 percent, respectively.

Samsung Electronics increased its share from 35.5 percent to 39.1 percent, whereas SK Hynix’s share fell slightly from 28.2 percent to 27.4 percent. That of Micron dropped 2.8 percentage points to 25.2 percent. The fourth to sixth places were taken by Nanya, Winbond, and Powerchip, whose shares ranged from 1.0 percent to 3.7 percent.

Samsung Electronics raised its operating-profit-to-sales ratio to as high as 39 percent, which is a record high in the industry, thanks to its nano-scale process advancement. The company boosted the ratio of the 25 nanometer process up to 85 percent. SK Hynix’s business profit rate amounted to 38 percent, too.

Meanwhile, Micron’s profit rate was limited to 25.5 percent due to its high dependence on 30 nanometer process. Inotera, a small firm located in Taiwan, recorded an outstanding business profit rate of 55 percent in the second quarter.
