Cheaper Than Other Premium Phones

Samsung Electronics is expected to sell about 28 million units of the Galaxy S21 this year.

Samsung Electronics is expected to sell about 28 million units of its latest flagship smartphone model, the Galaxy S21, this year, according to Counterpoint Research, a market research company. This is a 7 to 8 percent increase compared with the Galaxy S20, which posted 26 million units.

Samsung Electronics is set to launch the Galaxy S21 at the end of this month, more than a month earlier than usual. U.S. sanctions against Huawei are expected to help push up sales of the new model. Analysts say that the new model’s price competitiveness will also play a big part in boosting sales.

The Galaxy S21 will retail at 999,000 won, the lowest price among 5G premium smartphones in the Korean market.

The Galaxy S21 Plus is priced at 1,199,000 won, the Galaxy S21 Ultra (256G) at 1,452,000 won and the Galaxy S21 Ultra (512G) at 1.599,400 won.

These prices are up to 250,000 won lower than those of the predecessor. Samsung Electronics excluded chargers and earphones from components in order to lower retail prices. It has also lowered certain specifications and materials in the basic and plus models.

But the company upgraded specifications for the highest priced model. In particular, it has applied S Pen, a function that has been used only for the Galaxy Note Series, to the Galaxy S21 Ultra model, which also boasts an 180-megapixel camera and 10-fold zoom telephoto camera. In addition, the model is loaded with 12GB or higher RAMs along with a WQHD+ edge display.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics will take the wraps off the Galaxy S21 on Jan. 15 and start receiving preorders. Its official sales will begin on Jan. 29. It will be globally launched sequentially.

As a result, the new Galaxy S21 and Apple's iPhone 12 are expected to square off against each other in the smartphone market. Apple's iPhone 12 Mini is priced at 950,000 won.
