To Launch the Nexo in 2021

Hyundai Motor's Nexo hydrogen fuel cell vehicle

Hyundai Motor will knock on the door of the Japanese market again for the first time in about a decade with eco-friendly cars.

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported on Dec. 19 that Hyundai Motor plans to launch the "Nexo," a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCV), in the Japanese market in 2022. Hyundai Motor has acquired the necessary certification to sell the Nexo in Japan.

Hyundai Motor tapped into the Japanese market in 2001 but withdrew from it in 2009 due to its weak brand power. At the time, Hyundai Motor failed to gain a foothold in the strongholds of local automakers such as Toyota.

Hyundai Motor has judged that eco-friendly cars have competitiveness in Japan, even though its internal combustion engine models may not. In particular, the Korean carmaker took into account the Japanese government's policy to promote the supply of electric vehicles and expand the related infrastructure such as hydrogen charging stations and EV chargers.
