LG Group launched the LG AI Research Institute.

LG Group hired a world-class AI expert and launched the LG AI Research Institute an organization dedicated to AI at the company level on Dec. 7.

The group appointed Bae Gyung-hoon, a senior executive in charge of the LG Science Park AI promotion team as head of the LG AI Research Institute. In addition, LG hired Lee Hong-rak, a professor at the University of Michigan, a world-renowned AI scholar and a former member of Google's AI research organization "Google Brain," in time for the launch of the institute.

Lee will hold the position of the C-Level AI scientist and plays a role in securing fundamental AI technology and set up mid- to long-term technology strategies. Lee was selected as one of the world's top 10 AI researchers at the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE) in 2013.

The LG AI Research Institute will study the latest AI technology such as next-generation voice, image recognition and analysis technology, deep learning-based language processing technology, and data intelligence that predicts optimal judgment through big data analysis. It will also play a role in addressing LG Group affiliates’ problems such as predicting battery life and capacity and finding new drug candidates through AI research.

LG Group plans to invest 200 billion won in securing global talents and developing AI technology over the next three years.
